It's a standard measure of aerobic fitness -- a lab test (breathing into a mask on a treadmill) is the direct way to measure it; a field test like this one estimates it instead.
How does the Cooper test estimate VO2 max from a distance?
Kenneth H. Cooper's 1968 research, originally built to screen aerobic fitness for the U.S. Air Force, found that how far someone can run in exactly 12 minutes correlates closely with their lab-measured VO2 max. The formula is a linear fit to that relationship -- accurate to within roughly 10-15% of a treadmill test for most people, not an exact substitute for one.
What if I can't run for 12 straight minutes?
Run and walk -- the test measures total distance covered in the 12 minutes, not that every step has to be a run. The estimate gets less reliable the more the effort deviates from a genuine maximal aerobic pace, since the underlying formula was built from data where participants pushed close to their real limit.
Why do the fitness categories only cover ages 20-29?
VO2 max standards shift downward with age for both sexes -- the 20-29 band is the most commonly cited reference point, but a "fair" score at 45 corresponds to a different raw number than a "fair" score at 25. Treat the category here as a same-age-group comparison, not an absolute rating across every age.
