How it's calculated

The calculator subtracts the bar weight from your target, splits what's left evenly between both sides, then loads the largest plate that still fits, repeating down to the smallest -- the standard way anyone loads a bar by hand. If that doesn't land exactly on target, it also checks whether one more of the smallest plate per side gets closer, and shows whichever total is nearer.

Worked example: 225 lb on a 45 lb bar

Weight to load225 − 45 (bar) = 180 lb total, 90 lb per side
Per side45 + 45 = 90 lb
Achieved weight45 + (90 × 2) = 225 lb (exact)

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't my target weight load exactly?

Plates only come in fixed sizes (45, 35, 25, 10, 5, 2.5 lb; 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25 kg), so not every number is reachable. The calculator shows the closest weight you can actually load and how far off it is from your target.

Which weight should I use if my target isn't loadable?

Round to whichever side you're training for. Going into a top set, round down and treat the small gap as a bonus rep in reserve; on a planned overload day, round up. The calculator shows both directions implicitly -- the achieved weight is always the single closest option.

Why do you list a 33 lb bar as an option?

It's a common weight for reduced-load technique and training bars used in some gyms and youth/novice programs, alongside 25, 20, 15 and 10 lb versions. If you don't know your bar's exact weight, most commercial gyms use a standard 45 lb (men's) or 35 lb (women's) Olympic bar.

Does the order the plates are listed in matter for loading?

Yes -- load largest plates first, closest to the sleeve collar, then work outward to the smallest. That's the order the calculator lists them in, and it's also what the bar diagram shows.
